Leading the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030

Budget for this programme
$12.0M
12 million USD

On 1 March 2019, under Resolution 73/284, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2021–2030 to be the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (hereafter referred to as the UN Decade), with the primary aim being to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems worldwide. UNEP and FAO, as the lead UN agencies, were mandated to develop and implement the strategy of the UN Decade. The project is linked to the current Programme of Work (PoW) through Subprogramme 1 on Climate Change (CC) and Subprogramme 3 on Healthy and Productive Ecosystems (HPE). It is also well aligned with anticipated outcomes for the Medium-Term Strategy 2022–2025 through the pillars of Climate Stability (CS) and Living in Harmony with Nature (LHN). Targets within the SDGs that refer specifically to ecosystem restoration and which will be linked directly to the UN Decade’s activities, include but are not limited to SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 13: Climate Action; SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 15: Life on Land. Through partnerships, a digitally-driven ‘New Power’ approach, sharing of knowledge, lessons learned, promoting of selected flagships and documenting state of “restoration” the project seeks to catalyse the upscaling of restoration over hundreds of millions of hectares in terrestrial and marine environments. The three outcomes of the proposed project pertain to the leadership and facilitation role of UNEP within the UN Decade and include: 1) a global movement on ecosystem restoration established that catalyzes restoration initiatives, political will, exchange of knowledge, and cross-sectoral collaboration; 2) increased capacity and capability in private, public sector and civil society for policy reforms, to catalyse investments and access to resources which result in implementation of restoration actions on the ground, including within flagship initiatives; and 3) results documented and shared, through monitoring and reporting on biophysical and socio-economic elements of sustainable ecosystem restoration and influencing activities for ecosystem restoration.
