UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI)

This project supports the next phase of the UN Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI). As a global partnership between the UN and the global finance sector, UNEP FI seeks to mainstream sustainability in the finance industry globally. Executive Summary As a global partnership between the UN and more than 300 300 members i.e., banks, insurers, and investors; and over 100 supporting institutions, globally, roughly half in developing countries, UNEP FI seeks to mainstream sustainability in the finance industry globally to mobilize private sector finance for sustainable development. By leveraging the UN’s normative role to transform investments, over the years UNEP FI has galvanized the deep integration of sustainability into financial practice. The frameworks UNEP FI has established or co-created establish the norms for sustainable finance, providing the basis for standard-setting and catalyzing the role of private finance in complementing public finance from states, MDBs and partners. The PRB is especially notable in being the first such framework established post-2015 and therefore clearly focusing on the 2030 Agenda and Paris Agreement and applying impact analysis and target setting as the means of implementation.
