The International Resource Panel: Science-Policy Interface in Support of Resource Efficiency

The International Resource Panel was established by UNEP in 2007, to provide research on the sustainable use of natural resources and their environmental impacts. Human, economic, and environmental well-being depends upon the sustainable management of the planet’s natural resources. Unfortunately, inefficient and unsustainable use of our planet’s resources results in environmental degradation and places increased pressure on the carrying capacity of the earth. Policies are therefore required that promote the sustainable management of resources, including their efficient use and decreased environmental and social impacts. However, policy-makers often lack sound, accessible and understandable scientific information as a basis for developing such policies. The objective of this project is therefore to 1)provide scientific knowledge on the issues related to sustainable resource management, including circular economy, which are essential for decision and policy making in such a way that policy makers use that knowledge to inform decision-making, (2) to improve awareness and understanding of the importance of resources for sustainable development and poverty reduction, as well as for meeting all the Sustainable Development Goals, and (3) to enhance the capacity of policymakers and other stakeholders to understand and use relevant scientific information. This will be achieved through tailored communications, outreach and capacity development activities. The IRP provides independent and authoritative scientific assessments on the use of natural resources and related environmental impacts over the full life cycle and contributes to a better understanding of how to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation. The Panel contributes to the science-policy interface by providing a platform for exchange between policy-makers and the world’s leading resource scientists (from diverse disciplinary backgrounds). It presents timely, accessible and policy-relevant scientific information on resource-related issues, which can inform the design and implementation of policies to promote sustainable and inclusive development.
