Generation Restoration: Catalyzing a nature-based transformation in Finance, Jobs, and Cities

This project outlines a package of activities over three years (2023-2025) to inform, inspire and enable policymakers, practitioners, businesses, and finance institutions to promote ecosystem restoration as part of a broader effort to put nature-based solutions at the heart of the social and economic paradigm under the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. It will do this by focusing on restoration opportunities in finance, job markets and cities, highlighting the benefits that investing in restoration can bring in terms of job creation. The project involves two components. The first is on jobs and finance and will track investment and jobs in nature-based solutions (NbS) as well as encourage business innovation and job creation in sectors that can be considered NbS. The second component will increase the engagement of city stakeholders, including vulnerable groups (women, children, and the poor), in restoring urban and peri-urban ecosystems. The project will contribute to, and be sustained by, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. This is, itself, a multipronged, self-sustained effort to ensure system change for ecosystem restoration around the world and across sectors. It is also a major institutional priority for UNEP’s global and regional work, and so the projects results will inform UNEP’s wider work with a view to facilitating their replication. It also links to PoW direct outcome 2.2 (public and financial flows contribute to improved ecosystems management). The project contributes to SDG targets 15.b.1 revenue generated and finance mobilized from biodiversity-relevant instruments and 11.6 by 2030, reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities.
