One UNEP Youth and Education Project (2024-2027)

With the global youth population projected to increase to 1.3 billion by 2030 and UNEP’s mission “to inspire, inform, and enable nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations,” the project “One UNEP Youth and Education Project” is a critical addition to enable successful implementation of UNEP’s Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) 2022-2025 and all youth relevant strategies for 2026-2029. Channelling multi-disciplinary expertise across the Divisions and Regions, this project aims to shift awareness, mindsets, skill sets and values to deal with the climate, nature and pollution challenges the current and future generations face. As an integrated part of the Finance and Economic Transformation PCP, the Project will deliver youth-relevant and youth-targeting interventions across three thematic sub-programmes, building synergies and leveraging complementarities which will be a key in engaging young people. The work is aligned to the new Delivery Model Policy that seeks to enhance strategic focus towards the SDGs and aims to build a stronger and more integrated corporate approach to youth matters. Through its engagement and empowerment of youth via formal and non-formal education, youth reaching entities (sport, video games, music, fashion and film / TV), as well as in environmental projects and policy processes, the ultimate goal of this Project is to address the drivers negatively impacting climate, nature and pollution support by accelerating the adoption of Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) and circularity through youth behavioural change. This will also induce systemic shifts in education systems, mass-reach platforms practices, as well as environmental policies. In addition, this project will seek to emphasise engaging young women and girls who are likely to be more severely affected because of a lack of access to education opportunities, skills and vocational training and reduced political representation. With the Ecosystems Division as DRI, the project will generate the following Outcomes: ●Outcome 1: Education systems (formal and non-formal) integrate sustainable practices to address biodiversity loss, pollution and climate change and improve green education and skills building as a result of collaboration with key stakeholders. (Outcome DRI: Ecosystems Division). ●Outcome 2: Sectoral alliances advocate for the application of sustainability best practice and youth reaching entities collaborate and apply pro-environmental content in their offering and change their practices to address biodiversity loss, pollution and climate change. (Outcome DRI: Ecosystems Division, with the support of the Industry and Economy Division). ●Outcome 3: Enhanced engagement by youth in UN policy processes and increased youth leadership in interventions addressing biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change. (Outcome DRI: Communications Division in collaboration with, Law and Governance Affairs Office).
