OCHA Field activities, Central African Republic
Central African Republic continues to face a serious protection crisis, with a steady increase in violations of human rights and international humanitarian law despite the signing of the Political Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in 2019. Those who suffer the most, they are the civilian populations. One in four Central Africans is displaced either within the country or to a neighboring country, and the waves of return of displaced and repatriated people have slowed considerably. Since last year, the number of people in need has increased from 2.6 million to 2.8 million (+8%). At the same time, the number of people in need of acute assistance is 12% higher than in 2020. In five years, CAR has never counted so many people in humanitarian distress. This increase is the direct consequence of the plunge in macroeconomic indicators, the advent of new pockets of violent conflict, the rise of food insecurity and the COVID-19 pandemic.
