Go Blue Result Area 2 – “Connecting People, Cities and the Ocean: Innovative Land-Sea Planning and Management for a Sustainable and Resilient Kenyan Coast”

UNEP is well placed to lead global action on the sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems, utilizing the latest science combined with good management practices, to better understand and address the multiple interlinked drivers of ecological degradation, and to implement an ecosystem-based approach for enhanced maintenance and delivery of ecosystem services and further the transition to a sustainable blue economy. This project is located in the coastal area of Kenya across six counties. This project aims to address some identified missing linkages by strengthening the land-sea planning and management for coastal counties, and enhancing the integration of national and regional plans and enabling practical activities. The Go Blue project is highly relevant to the delivery of UNEP’s current and future Programmes of Work, as well as to a variety of global initiatives. This project addresses Subprogamme 3 – Healthy and Productive Ecosystems – in the UNEP Medium Term Strategy 2018 – 2021. The project will build towards output 2 of the PoW. Under this project, the tools, guidelines, frameworks and approaches developed will be applied and tested through the selected regional seas programme. An important product from this Output will be additional case studies on the role of gender in the blue economy and coastal and marine management. Based on the case studies, the project under this output will establish necessary elements to mainstream gender issues in the blue economy and marine and coastal ecosystem management. It is important to note that for Go Blue Result Area 2 objectives, the approach facilitates essential opportunities to engage and effectively address diverse stakeholder interests and needs, including mainstreaming gender perspectives into planning and implementation processes. Output 2: Customized tools and approaches for ecosystem-based management and sustainable blue economy are developed, tested and made available to support sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystem services The expected project outcome is to see that the value of marine and coastal ecosystem services is incorporated into coastal and marine decision-making and that there is increased awareness and commitments for investments in the sustainable management of coastal and marine ecosystem services.
