OCHA Field activities, Niger

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has been present in Niger since 2005, a year particularly marked by a serious food crisis. Since then, OCHA Niger, in support of the Humanitarian Coordinator and the Government, coordinates emergency assistance to populations affected by multiple crises. OCHA Niger works in close collaboration with all State structures both in the field and in Niamey, highlighting, whenever possible, the leadership of national structures, while ensuring respect for humanitarian and operational principles. Niger faces a complex humanitarian emergency marked by continued insecurity and violence against civilians perpetrated by elements of armed groups, endemic poverty, the effects of climate change, including seasonal flooding and pockets of drought. The humanitarian situation is further aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic which is leading to an exponential increase in needs.
