What Are the SDGs
- When and how were they set. Adopted in September 2015 by UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/70/1, "Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development." They succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of 2000–2015.
- Structure. 17 Goals → 169 Targets → a global indicator framework. The UN Statistics Division compiles member state reporting to publish progress.
- Who reviews it. Each year at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), countries submit Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), and the UN publishes "The Sustainable Development Goals Report."
- Deadline. 2030. Work out how much time remains as of the day you are reading this page.

Limits of the SDGs — What to Keep in Mind
An Indicator May Exist, but the Data May Not
The UN global indicator framework has 231 unique indicators, but recent observations are missing for many countries. The tables on this page show those empty cells exactly as they are.
Numbers Arrive Years Late
Because of survey cycles, key indicators such as poverty, nutrition and maternal mortality often show the latest value from one to five years ago. Today's crises may not yet be reflected in the statistics.
Averages Hide Gaps
A better global average can mask specific regions or groups falling further behind. The principle of 'Leave No One Behind' cannot be verified from averages alone.
An Agreed Goal, Not an Enforceable One
The SDGs are a political agreement adopted by General Assembly resolution A/RES/70/1 in 2015, not a treaty with binding obligations. Implementation relies on each country's Voluntary National Review (VNR).
The Financing Gap
Estimates of the gap between the financing developing countries need to implement the SDGs and what is actually invested vary across UN reports. This page publishes no such estimate — only original observed figures.
This page does not declare any goal a failure. It simply shows the published figures and the empty cells as they are. Deciding what to fix first is up to world citizens.
